A Special word to Dads.

Dad, your presence matters more than you may realize.

Your baby already recognizes your voice, your touch, and your presence. You are an important part of your baby's sense of safety, security, and connection. There is no "perfect" way to be a father—simply showing up with love, patience, and consistency makes a lasting difference.

The Power of Your Voice

Babies often become calmer when they hear a familiar, loving voice. Speaking softly, singing, reading a book, or simply talking to your baby while holding them can help regulate their breathing, heart rate, and emotions.

Skin-to-Skin Contact

Skin-to-skin isn't only for Mom.

Holding your diapered baby against your bare chest can:

  • Help calm a fussy baby.

  • Promote bonding and attachment.

  • Support healthy brain development.

  • Help regulate your baby's temperature, breathing, and heart rate.

  • Increase your confidence as a father.

  • Create beautiful moments of connection.

Even 20–30 minutes of uninterrupted skin-to-skin time can make a meaningful difference.

Ways to Bond with Your Baby

  • Practice skin-to-skin contact.

  • Talk, sing, or pray over your baby.

  • Read books together.

  • Take walks while babywearing or pushing the stroller.

  • Help with diaper changes and bath time.

  • Comfort your baby after feedings.

  • Burp your baby.

  • Hold your baby while Mom rests.

  • Make eye contact and smile during awake times.

  • Create your own daily routine with your baby.

Remember, bonding grows over time through consistent moments of love.

Remember to Breathe

Your baby often responds to your calm.

When you feel overwhelmed, pause and practice slow rhythmic breathing:

Breathe in for 4 seconds.

Hold gently for 2 seconds.

Breathe out slowly for 4 seconds.

Repeat several times.

As your body begins to relax, your baby often relaxes with you. Your calm breathing, steady heartbeat, and gentle voice communicate safety to your child.

Fathers Can Experience Postpartum Depression Too

The arrival of a new baby brings joy, but it can also bring unexpected stress, exhaustion, anxiety, and emotional changes.

Some signs may include:

  • Feeling sad or emotionally numb.

  • Increased irritability or anger.

  • Feeling overwhelmed or disconnected.

  • Difficulty sleeping, even when given the opportunity.

  • Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy.

  • Feeling like you're not doing enough.

  • Withdrawing from family and friends.

  • Increased anxiety or constant worry.

These feelings are more common than many fathers realize, and they are nothing to be ashamed of.

If these feelings continue or become overwhelming, please reach out to your healthcare provider, a mental health professional, a trusted pastor, or someone you trust. Asking for support is a sign of wisdom and strength.
